Manuka Honey New Zealand
Pouatu Mānuka
Pouatu Mānuka produces an award-winning premium multifloral Forest honey. Located in The Forgotten World of New Zealand and sold throughout the world.
As a boutique company that focuses on the quality of the honey we produce, the team manages every part of the process from land care, hive management, harvesting and packaging. Experienced beekeepers who have a passion for honey and producing a premium product for the world to enjoy.
Pouatu Mānuka is truly single sourced and is not a blend from regions around New Zealand. The intention is to capture the flavour of one place – The Forgotten World. Selling only what the harvest provides each season; quantities are strictly limited. This translates to unrivalled taste. Unlike much other Mānuka honey that is sharp and astringent. Pouatu manuka honey provides a subtle, gentle flavour profile with a smooth, velvety texture and finish.
Both UMF and MGO levels indicate the concentration of some of the bioactive chemical compounds found in mānuka honey. The information below explains the difference between the two and explains why Pouatu Manuka use UMF.
The MGO rating is a way of testing and certifying the amount of methylglyoxal (MGO) content in the honey. It was developed by Professor Thomas Henle and his team at the University of Dresden in 2008 and is an indicator of quality.
UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) is the grading system that Pouatu Mānuka use. UMF is a complete and more advanced grading system that incorporates the MGO levels with additional testing of authenticity, looking at both dihydroxyacetone and leptosperin levels. It is the best indicator of the quality and purity of manuka honey.
Although both UMF and MGO have different values, there is a way of comparing the two. The table below shows the conversion of UMF to MGO rating.
UMF 5 | MGO 83 |
UMF 10 | MGO 263 |
UMF 15 | MGO 514 |
UMF 20 | MGO 829 |
The terms monofloral and multifloral are references to the quality of honey and are categorised by the UMF rating. Anything above UMF 5 is considered a monofloral Manuka honey, whilst anything below UMF 5 is considered a multifloral Manuka honey. Monofloral honey comes from the nectar of one main Manuka flower. Multifloral is honey that comes from the nectar of multiple flowers or honey.
The different grades of honey provide different values to each other. Lower UMF grade honey between UMF5-UMF10 is safe for daily consumption. The mid-grade UMF10-15 honey is called Therapeutic Grade and is good for short-term consumption. Our UMF20 honey can be used for skin therapy, to fight bacterial infections and bad wounds.
